Brand DNA
In the beginning...
Established in 1638, HYDE®'s journey began with James Hyde's Hyde & Hodge Co., pioneers in Belize's early economy. This 1940s footage from the Huntley Archives offers a rare glimpse into the mahogany logging operations in British Honduras now Belize, highlighting the extraction of this luxurious wood, which was exported to Europe and America for fine furniture and craftsmanship. Today, we honor this legacy by transforming our colonial past into a future of empowerment and innovation. Embracing Belize's Meso-American and Commonwealth heritage, we redefine 'America' to include Central, South America, and the Caribbean. As the Belizean national anthem proclaims, 'No longer shall we be hewers of wood,' we are committed to shaping a future that transcends history.
Logwood Legacy & Sustainability
Sustainability at Hyde is not a campaign. It is inheritance. Belize is not a backdrop to this brand. It is its foundation. Long before sustainability became a global industry term, it was simply how we lived. Resourcefulness was culture. Respect for land was instinct. Community was infrastructure.
The land that shaped this brand also shaped global trade. Hyde & Hodge Co., later reorganized as the British Honduras Company and eventually the Belize Estate & Produce Company, exported logwood and mahogany into the British textile economy. Logwood dyes colored English fabrics. Belize was embedded in global supply chains centuries before the language of globalization existed.
That history is complex. It carries ingenuity, commerce, extraction, power, and consequence. It cannot be erased. It must be understood. Hyde operates on a made-to-order model not because it is fashionable, but because it is responsible. We produce only what is commissioned. We minimize waste by design. Craftsmanship is not rushed. Materials are selected with intention.
If earlier centuries were defined by extraction, this century must be defined by stewardship. Luxury, in its highest form, is not excess. It is care. It is continuity. It is responsibility carried forward.
